Vim

Vim is my text editor of choice.

There is also the alternative of using Emacs, which is a great text editor in its own right.

The only problem that I have with Vim is its design philosophy; it was designed to be a text editor, and only a text editor.

This is really what makes Emacs more powerful: Emacs can interface with external programs (like gdb, make, and the shell) in a natural way (although it's possible to do with Vim, it's messy and feels hacked), it provides ways (e.g. Dired) to rename files and interact with the shell in the text editor environment, etc.

Overall I think Vim wins out on shortcuts, modes, and the ease of keyboard interaction, but Emacs wins my vote for most versatile text editor.
