Something I often think about while trudging down desire paths - at BYU they have a saying, "Cougars don't cut corners." The collective has agreed that everyone will color between the lines, and sacrifice the convenience of shortcuts, to keep the environment unperturbed.

It's engineering the users to adapt to an environment (via good habits), instead of engineering an environment to adapt to users (and their bad habits).
