Ingredients

  • 1.5 cups dry macaroni
  • 4 + 1 tablespoons butter (divided)
  • 3 tablespoons flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon pepper
  • 1.5 cups whole milk
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar
  • 2 tablespoons dry bread crumbs

Directions

Macaroni:

  • Cook macaroni according to package instructions

Cheese sauce:

  • In saucepan, melt 4 tablespoons butter over medium heat
  • Stir in flour, salt, pepper, until smooth (about 3 minutes)
  • Slowly add milk, bring to bubble, cook until thick (about 2 minutes)
  • Reduce heat, add cheese until all is melted

Baking:

  • Add drained macaroni to 1.5 quart baking dish
  • Pour cheese sauce over macaroni and mix thoroughly
  • Melt remaining 1 tablespoon butter and add bread crumbs, sprinkle on top of mac and cheese
  • Bake uncovered at 375 F for 30 minutes (or until golden brown on top)
