Ingredients

  • 1 cup whole wheat flour
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup old fashioned rolled oats
  • 2 tbsp sugar
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1.5 cups light or dark beer (not a stout), cold or at room temperature, not flat

Directions

  • Preheat oven to 400 F and grease an 8.5 x 4.5 inch (6 cup) loaf pan
  • Whisk flour, oats, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt together thoroughly in a large bowl
  • Add the beer
  • Fold just until dry ingredients are moistened
  • Scrape batter into pan and spread evenly
  • Bake until toothpick inserted into center and all the way to bottom comes out clean, 35-40 minutes
  • Let cool on the pan rack 10 min before unmolding to cool on the rack

Variations

Beer Cheese and Scallion Bread

  • Prepare the quick beer bread as above, and add 1/2 cup finely diced sharp cheddar or aged monterey jack cheese, and 1/4 cup scallions
  • Caraway seeds can also be added

Notes

  • IPAs will give the bread a nice bitter flavor
  • One of my favorite beers to use when making this bread is Founder's All Day IPA
